  How about using the same search site-wide, but give it "Apple-Spotlight" type capabilities- ie your search syntax might look like: "Dan Jones kind:Lead" or "Email kind:Campaign"?

  I like site-wide search idea, but I'm afraid novice users will need to read TFM to learn about the search syntax. I'm leaning towards live search idea when you update search results a you type (without auto_complete dropdown). This requires no explanation whatsoever.

  You should take a look at my fork if you haven't yet, I implemented something along these lines, although its not true search per se, more a quick way to jump to specific users. The use case is you get a phone call from a client and need to quickly jump to their record to capture a couple notes.

  Implemented live search for all core asset types.
